  • Essay / Schools Should Provide Daycare for Teen Parents

    As times continually change, it is inevitable that the statistics will change as well. For every student who doesn't graduate from high school, another statistic appears. One American epidemic that always seems to be looming on the horizon concerns the issue of parenting and teen pregnancy. According to an article on teen pregnancies compiled at teenhelp.com, the United States is considered the leading country for teen pregnancies in the Western industrialized world. Because of this statistic, it is important to evaluate what can be done to prepare teen parents for success, as well as what can be done for children born into young families. In an article on teen parenting written by Linda Mangel, it is said that almost seventy percent of teen mothers do not complete high school, and for this reason, it becomes evident that a solution is crucial. Secondary schools would benefit from considering the establishment of daycare systems in order to increase the graduation rate of teenage parents. The debate over whether or not daycare centers are appropriate for secondary schools raises an important question: Does the location of daycare centers in secondary schools condone teenage pregnancies? In an online newspaper obtained from MSNBC, it is argued that high school daycares do not effectively convey the ins and outs of teen parenthood and therefore appear to tolerate the concept of teen pregnancy. The reality of this counterargument, however, is that daycares exist solely to provide an ideal environment for parents and children.
