Monsters: These are those who intentionally and repeatedly harm others, physically or emotionally, without remorse. Filling minds with paranoia, insinuating themselves into the darkest parts of the human psyche, and playing the starring role in many nightmares, monsters terrorize the happiness and sanity of everyday life. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a well-meaning scientist creates life, but he is horrified by the appearance of his creation, neglects to care for it, and ultimately turns it evil. In The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, a handsome man, influenced by his friends, loses his sense of identity and morality. Shelley and Wilde create two distinct characters, Creation and Dorian Gray, neglected in proper reception. Every man strives to find himself, to understand himself, but when a person takes a wrong path on his path to self-realization, the harmful effects reverberate throughout his life. . The vanity of the inhabitants, who cannot look beyond the horrible appearance of the creation, conditions the creation to expect negative responses as a result of its good deeds. After saving a young girl from drowning, the creation recounts in despair: “This was then the reward for my kindness! . . . as a reward, I have now withered beneath the miserable pain of a wound that has broken flesh and bone” (Shelley 101). This act of violence against creation marks its turning point. It broke his gentle spirit. Dissuading him from his path of kindness, the creation eventually gives in and reciprocates the feelings of hatred he receives from the villagers. His personality therefore reflects his monstrous appearance. Bond reinforces this idea that the villagers condition creation to expect neglect due to kindness when he states that creation is "alienated from kindness and communal interactions, and rewards ostracism with violent crimes” (Bond). The villagers train the creation to act wickedly and consequently transform him into a monstrosity that terrifies them all. Following a scandalous marriage, Dorian Gray loses his way. After being rejected from human society, creation "declares eternal war on the species, and more than anything on him who had formed [creation] and sent [creation] into this unbearable misery" (Shelley 97). Creation's new passion for revenge dominates its last innocent and pure feelings. Every hateful action, committed by creation, can be traced directly back to the unjust villagers and their cruel abandonment. The murders of William, Clerval, and Elizabeth represent creation's spite toward Frankenstein, while the framing of Justine for William's death depicts creation's hatred of even the best of humanity. However, without being exposed to the corrupt ways of humans, creation could not possess enough malice to continue its hateful actions. Therefore, the corrupt defile creation in revenge. On the other hand, the corrupt taint Dorian Gray with a loss of remorse. Devoting himself to Lord Henry's words, "he becomes indifferent to the effects of his actions which not only destroy others (in a way never specified) but also leave him mortally marred" (Aubrey). Before Lord Henry's influence, Gray possessed a benevolent spirit that would be unable to bear such burdens. Lord Henry's leadership desensitizes Gray to the effects of his own sin.
