Essay / The Gospel of John - 1721
Hermeneutical Document - John 14:12-14When reading the book of John, it is important to know the genre that the Gospel is. Before reading the book of John, it is important to know the main focus and intentions of the book, that is, the gospel is primarily focused on the life of Jesus and its main purpose is to prove that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. As Russell says, by reading the Gospel, readers can discover the characteristics of Jesus and learn about his teachings which provide an exceptional model for all Christians seeking spiritual growth. One should also keep in mind the different directions of interpreting the Gospels, of which in the book of John there are six, including: emphasizing the broader context when reading, studying background information regarding history and culture, focusing on Jesus, knowing that the primary purposes of the Gospel is to prove that Jesus is the Messiah, comparing the different Gospel accounts among the four different Gosepels when appropriate, and understanding the centrality of the kingdom of God in the Gospels. By following these principles above, it allows the reader of the book of John to not only understand the reader's intended definition of the passage as a whole, but also amplifies their understanding of the rest of the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The early Church as well as some today can assert that John “the disciple whom Jesus loved” is not the author of the book of John. However, the author is clearly not Peter as John 21:20-21 shows and Herod killed James in 44 AD, so the evidence leads to John being the author around 90 AD. Unlike the gospels of Luke, Matthew and Mark which each had a certain specific target audience, the book of ...... middle of paper ...... ended for requests. Misinterpreting John 14:12-14 in defiance of the author's original intent, the passage can have negative impacts on the reader's faith and ultimately lead to hatred in their heart toward God. How can this be done?, people's prayers often contain things that do not deserve to be directly related to the name of Jesus. We can see that when these requests that include the name of Jesus and are linked to false requests that do not bring glory to God are not granted, they often deny the existence of God or, even worse, point point the finger at God and blame him. for not giving them what they asked for. To conclude, it is also important to keep in mind that when we ask God for anything, we must accept that our requests should ultimately bring glory to Him in a way that pleases Him in Jesus name..
