Levi is my nephew, born to my biological brother Zalema and his wife Annette Kuedituka. Elliette is Levi's order sister, born two and a half years before Levi. They both grew up in the same house where they were exposed to English and Lingala. Lingala is a native language of Congo spoken in Kinshasa and neighboring regions. What's interesting is that Levi not only mastered this language better than his sister and most Congolese children born or raised in the United States, but he did so before he reached the age of two using the phases and syntaxes used by adult Congolese. How did this happen? With this article, try to answer this question by considering the communication stages of toddlers aged 19 to 24 months. Between 19 and 24 months, the child has undergone many developmental changes. However on this discussion I will only consider communication. At this stage, the toddler's cerebral cortex exhibits left hemisphere specialization for language, because for most of us, the left hemisphere of the cerebral cortex is responsible for our spoken and written languages ββ(Berk, 2010). Also at this age, most typically developing children begin to expand their vocabulary by 50 to 200 words and, in many cases, begin to combine two words. Although at this age, toddlers begin to use language to communicate their emotions and feelings, their limited vocabulary would cause them to use tantrums to insist on their demands (Berk, 2010). Most children develop their communication skills from their caregivers or mothers, but for this to happen, they must have developed an attachment to these people. In this case, instead of a clash of two cultures, which would have caused confusion and delay in Levi's linguistic development, he strived and learned both languages ββin tandem. On the other hand, I have two children who have been exposed to three languages: English, Lingala and Japanese. They speak English fluently, but they can barely construct simple sentences in these other two languages, even though Lingala is the language my wife and I use at home to communicate with them..
