Essay / Essay on Gentleman - 1159
Gentlemen are capable of making mistakes but the difference between a gentleman and a little man is that the gentleman will be sincere about his mistake and correct it unlike the little man who tries to cover up your mistake. . One of Confucius' disciples said: "This man's mistakes are like eclipses of the sun and the moon." When he does one, everyone sees it; when he corrects him, everyone admires him” (Huang 182). The gentleman is someone that people admire because they are generally morally good, so when he makes a mistake, everyone who admires him sees his mistake. In order to continue to be virtuous and admired, a gentleman corrects his mistake and again, everyone who admires that gentleman can see his moral accomplishment. The little man makes mistakes but unlike the gentleman he does not fix them. Confucius describes the efforts of the little man after a mistake: “When the little man makes a mistake, he always passes it over in silence” (Huang 179). The little man is not truthful like the superior man. The little man doesn't even make his mistake known to society, but before anyone sees his mistake, he tries to hide and cover it up. Confucius also makes it known that gentlemen in this quote are superior to little men because little men lie. Therefore, according to Confucius, being a gentleman means being honest even after humiliating.
