E(dward) E(stlin) CummingsEdward Estlin Cummings more commonly known as EE Cummings was born on October 14th. He went to Harvard College and began writing poetry around 1904. He unfortunately died of a brain. hemorrhaged on September 3, 1962. However, he remained very popular. Influenced by many poets and by the situations in which he found himself, EE Cummings invented his own style of writing which is still praised by critics today (Anderson). Cummings was influenced by many different things. His father was a professor at Harvard and he became one as well. Many of his writings come from personal experiences, for example when he was a prisoner in France during the war which led him to write the "Immense Room". Which became very popular and is something he is best known for. He also spent time in the ambulance corps, a medical team that helps people who can't get to a hospital. When EE Cummings married his wife, his work became quieter, melodramatic and somewhat erotic. Many different poets influenced Cummings giving him the inspiration to create his own personal writing style. Gertrude Stein, Amy Lowell, Ezra Pound and of course his wife: his wife Elaine influenced him to write very erotic poems, which almost everyone loved. Gertrude Stein influenced him to create images in his writings. She was an artist and sometimes writer. Most of the images accompanying her poems were due to her. Amy Lowell was a writer of free verse, she also used sonnets most of the time. Cummings also used the sonnet for the structure of his poem. He is actually known for the English sonnet. An English sonnet consists of three quatrains and a final couplet. It also features ABAB, CDCD, EFEF and GG rhyming pattern. Ezra Pound's language is what influences the medium of paper and is influenced by his style, but he has yet to sound as good as Cummings. Personally, I think Cummings is a great writer. The way he used different words to mean different thoughts is quite impressive. I wish I was smart enough to write like EE Cummings. I also think it's terrible that no one really appreciated his poetry until his death; he'll never know how much people really mean it. And no one can really ask him how he really came up with all these ideas. This is all just an opinion, he's not here to challenge any of these ideas. (Arthros). Today, Cummings' work is still well-known and definitely still great. “Cummings wrote at least a dozen poems that seem incomparable to me. Three of them are among the great love poems of our time or of all time” (Malcolm Cowley). Using the influences brought to him, Cummings used everything to his advantage and became a literary legacy..
