Nash showed negative symptoms such as flat affect, alogia, and anhedonia. This had negative consequences on his interpersonal relationships, to the extent that, with the exception of his wonderful wife (a bright and determined student of John's) and his classmates, he had none and these were put to the test by his misunderstood behavior. Throughout the film, although he speaks clearly, his speech is rather thin and choppy, his movements are clumsy, and he suffers from eye movement dysfunction. As a result of this and the respective symptoms mentioned above, his level of functioning is severely diminished for a significant period of time since his onset, meeting criteria B for
