Use of Force DefinitionIn police work, a great deal of discretion is given. Stealth grants great power, and that power includes the ability to take someone's life. Police officers are allowed to commit suicide if there is danger to themselves, the surrounding community and depending on the severity of the situation. The three circumstances are continually calculated by the police officer. Police are trained to deal with use of force and deadly force using a one-plus-one approach. The method tells officers that, in all situations, their intensity should be one step up or down from the suspect. Intensity can come from vocal presence or maintaining a higher degree of physicality. All of this can be presented through what is called the Force Continuum. Use of Force and Force Continuum When police are dealing with hostile individuals, they must demonstrate strength and composure when dealing with hostile individuals. confront the suspect. To help guide the officer in a hostile situation, he is trained to use the force continuum. The continuum guides officers in responding to difficult people and holds them to an ethical standard. Not only does the continuum help officers assess where they are expected to be in escalation, but also in de-escalation of the suspect. The main variable used to determine where the agent should fall on the continuum is resistance versus control.
