Essay / Social Work Discussion Paper - 726
Growing up with traditional Hmong parents, I was taught not to ask questions because it might offend others. Since then, I've already kept things to myself, even when I was curious about others, I often hoped that someone else would answer the questions I wanted to ask. As a social worker in training, the most important tool a social worker must possess is the importance of self-awareness. I learned that if I don't advocate for clients and their families, who will? It's my job to advocate for them and give them the resources they need and to do that I have to step out of my comfort zone and ask them questions. I also learned that as long as they understand that I am only asking questions to further help the client and their family, I should not overemphasize my fears of hurting their feelings, because the purpose of my questions is to help.
