She never had to experience the idea of integrating into her own culture. Being American is simply natural and constitutes a way of life for her. Traveling to another country, especially one that was nothing like she expected, helped her discover important ideas. She says being away from her own culture didn't change her, but allowed her to realize what values and habits were most important to her. In the other story, the author Patricia was of Korean descent, but was born and raised here in America. Because of her Korean background, Patricia never really knew for sure where she belonged. She used a name to describe it, "Hyphenated Americans", because she seems to be from another country but was born and raised here. People on the streets of New York will ask her where she's from and compliment her on her good English skills. This makes it difficult to truly identify as an American. To really know what your values and habits are. Traveling to Korea and visiting what they call her homeland allowed Patricia to gain important knowledge. Jamie traveled to Denmark as a student on a study abroad program. She expected the country to be quite similar to the United States. She was immediately surprised to see so many differences. Jamie says: “I was shocked to discover that the Danish way of life couldn't be more different from what I expected. » (350). Coming from New York, where everything goes very fast and career is very strong, she found a quiet and comfortable place.
