Get the original essay The person I interviewed was from Pakistan and he belongs to a middle class family and resides in Rawalpindi district. She was very interested in mathematics from the beginning and was generally good at studies. She was a good inmate. She said her father died when she was very young. His mother was also a working woman. She has 3 brothers and all of them are younger than her. She has no sisters. There are a total of 5 members in the family. She decides for her family and her mother also makes the decisions. Everyone listens to her because she is very confident and passionate about everything. She did A level with science subjects mathematics, physics and statistics. After that, she completed her bachelor's degree in science subjects. She did her masters in arts subjects, this is the first transition since she changed her subjects from science to arts. She said that she felt very good playing with her brothers in her spare time and also helped her brothers with their studies. Her brothers also listen to her because she is very dominant and does things correctly. She further added that she is very friendly and loves interacting with different people. She is an outgoing girl and likes to go out with her friends every weekend. What she said about her personality is that she is very social and likes to communicate with different people or with people of different age groups. To explain the transitions she experienced in her life and the reasons for these transitions, we discussed below: After completing her Master's degree, she worked for a year as an assistant professor at XYZ University. After that, she did a one-year internship at LMN University, then she worked as a director in another university for a while and now she has a job as a department coordinator in the same university in which she was interned (5:40 p.m.). In her childhood, she was interested in mathematics because she said it was fun for her to practice integration and differentiation mathematics, but later she changed her major. (3:14-3:3:50) It appeared from the video that she was unsure at the time about her career choice (4:04) and was considering to make a decision. She did not pursue higher education, preferring to pursue this profession after her Masters. She never thought about her future plans when she was young. She loves mathematics as a subject, but she never thought of becoming an engineer and opting for mathematics in the future. Instead, she preferred to choose the subjects that her friends told her to choose. She changed her subjects from science to arts. There are basically four transitions in his life. And she said that she herself was the reason for every transition. The reason she spoke about these transitions was the financial problems she faced after her father passed away. She also wanted to gain experience in other fields. She doesn't want to stick to the same job all her life. Delving deeper into her life experiences, she said she had noencountered no problems related to her gender, but that she had strengthened her position in each job and had not encountered any difficulties in any work environment. She always stays calm and relaxes with the environmental factors around her. She said that her family depends on her like brothers depend on her and that is also the reason why they listen to her. (5:21) She always thought that if she got a better opportunity than this, she would change jobs. Case Study: Looking at her There are many theories that best fit her career path. The first theory that helps the interviewer is the famous theory of John Holland (1959). The person said that she is very social and likes to interact with people who match her interests and personality, because now the job she does requires a lot of communication and interaction with other people . She further added that she has a lot of friends and loves going out with her friends every weekend. (08:09) she said that she likes to play video games with her brothers and that she feels very happy with them (05:09). After reflecting on the session, she seemed very relaxed but confident giving very responsive and positive non-verbal and verbal cues. As Holland (1973) puts it, “social people are very friendly, responsive, communicative, and caring. By looking at these factors, one can get an idea that the person has a social personality. She was interested in math subjects and solving questions and she was good at calculations which shows that she likes to do things orderly and systematic. Holland (1973) says that people who enjoy doing concrete tasks are called people. But the person had more social interests than realistic ones, so we can predict that she was a social person overall. If we see the relationship between realistic and social personality, the congruence between them is very low, which explains why the person is more social than realistic. She feels more relaxed in a social environment because she is the right person for it. She worked as a surfer, then as a program manager and later as a department coordinator at XYZ University. All these jobs require interactions with many people and she trained for this. This shows the congruence between his work environment and his personality. Her personality type matches that of Holland, her personality also shows that she is somewhat realistic but the social type dominates the realistic and it was explored that the person was more social than realistic. (Zunker 2012) stated that the social and realist type has very low congruence, which was easily demonstrated during the interview. (08:18). Another theory applied in its true sense is that of Donald Super (1990) who talks about three stages of life, namely life span, life space and self-concept. The person was in the establishment stage as they were between 24 and 45 years old. At this stage, it was in the process of stabilizing by strengthening its position in this business. (Niles and Haris, 2013). By looking at their answers, the interviewer can tell that the person was still in the transition phase because they said that they might think about changing jobs if they got a better opportunity than this one. When we talked about her first job, she said that it was her desire to gain some expertise in the field of work and that's why she started working as a university intern (06:19) . During her second year, she felt some difficulties with the student as program manager (7h10) and this is the reason why shealways wanted to do administrative work and reach a higher level. (7:28) This shows that the person was in the exploration stage as he was striving hard and looking for the job that suited him best. By acquiring different professional experiences, she crystallized her professional preference which was administrative. She was in the phase of professional adaptability and is exploring her interest by working in different environments. The person played different roles in their life which they expressed in detail. The major role she played was that of daughter and sister to her brothers. (5 p.m.). As an older sister, all the responsibility now lies on her shoulders and she must take on this role in a positive manner. During her interview, it was noted that after the Master's degree, the person was looking for a job and that she was very motivated to get it, even with a low salary scale. (6:25 a.m.). Her first job was as an intern and she did this job because she wanted to gain practical work experience. After working in other jobs, she became more focused and learned to know her role more clearly. Doing the work at college was very important to her, as was the older sister, and she wanted to share the burden with her mother. At that time she played the role of a girl. By then exercising other professions, his role became clearer to him. It seemed that she felt happy playing all the roles because her family was very cooperative towards her and respected every decision she made in her life. As Sharf (2010) points out, career decisions are made early on because it is the most thoughtful period of life. When she came to the administrative position via the Internet, she was not well aware of the job responsibilities at the time. During the first transition, she was unsure about her role as an administrator, but later, during her third transition, when she joined XYZ University, she found it easy to adapt to this environment and to clearly see its role. It was then that she became aware of her roles and responsibilities within her job. Initially, she did not consider a low salary scale as she wanted to enter the field of work, but over time, she felt that she should go for high-ranking jobs offering high salary scales. To see if there was a “contextual factor” involved in his life story, he describes Mcmohan's (2008) theory which states that certain internal and external factors affect the career development process. To relate this theory to the person's history, the internal factors are likely their interest and personality that motivate them to do this work. She worked in different jobs because she was comfortable in that field and it suited her personality and her environment. By exercising different professions, the person learns to know their personality in depth. She was happy and satisfied working in different environments and in different educational institutions. (7:15 a.m.). We therefore saw that most of his decisions were influenced by internal factors. But external factors also played a major role in his life, which we call environmental factors. Schneider & Corry (2007) famously state that “people are generally social creatures and are influenced and motivated by social factors”. As she explained, due to financial problems, she started doing this job at a very young age without completing her studies. The other reason she gave was the death of her father, which seriously affected the person and she could not complete her studies. She hasadded that she would have completed her studies and undertaken higher studies if the situation could have been different and if her father was alive. (1:53 p.m.). She opted for the third job because it offered her a high salary and the position offered was also high. She was very happy at XYZ University because her colleagues gave her support and cooperation in every situation she faced. The other theory that can be integrated into the development of the person's career progression is the Krumboltz Learning theory of career development. As he puts it (1975), learning occurs mainly through our direct experience of the situation. During her various jobs as an intern and program manager, she learned that she was good at administrative work rather than teaching students. Indeed, she has personally observed that the nature of each job is different from each other and that each job has different roles and responsibilities. By working three or four jobs, she became more confident and professional and learned the skills that were required for some of the jobs she was doing at the time. If we talk about associative learning according to Krumboltz, the person knows very well that administrative work requires a lot of patience and multitasking, but he nevertheless considers it good compared to the roles he would have teaching or constantly caring students. This theory also talks about the chances, the opportunities that we have. It concerns the person in this context who took advantage of different opportunities to gain experience. At first, she didn't know she was interested in administrative jobs, but as she took risks and worked with students and administration, she narrowed her options. But she was always motivated to seize new opportunities and she never missed an opportunity to enter a new environment and learn from it. Talking about Savickas' narrative theory is the best approach to guide the person to develop or construct their own theory using a lifeline or life themes that they have described. The emphasis is on self-construction and the person is in the process of constructing himself by adapting to the environment or by continually adapting to the unfavorable conditions that present themselves to him. The person tells her story by recounting her past experience and how her father wanted her to become a doctor (13:45). His life themes clearly discussed his life experiences. Life themes can be explored by developing or constructing your own story. She embarked on the process of creating life themes by taking a job as an intern, then left that job because she thought it wasn't a good fit for her. She constructs her own reality through direct experience. The person's self-construction was very strong. After her father's death, she remained very strong for her family and was building herself up by providing them with new opportunities throughout these times. She has made different transitions in life and at each stage there are experiences. For example, when she started her first job as an intern, she was in her growth phase according to Super (1990), later she changed jobs and started exploring the next step herself of life. She found solace in an administrative job where she explored her interests and duties and eventually became administrative and is now at the establishment stage.
