  • Essay / Called to Social Work - 1501

In the movie The Preacher Kid, Angie King is a character who plays the role of a pastor's daughter. Because her father is a preacher, she has values and rules that she must obey. Somewhere, Angie King decides that she doesn't want to be labeled a child pastor and follow her father's values and rules. Mrs. King wants to join a traveling gospel show; however, her father does not want her to join a traveling gospel group. Mr. King knows that she cannot handle all the circumstances and situations that may arise alone. King decides to leave her family and friends behind. Once Angie strikes out on her own, she forgets all the values, morals and rules her father instilled in her. Angie begins using drugs and begins having sex with the lead singer. He doesn't respect her at all. When living alone, one must remember all the values that have been taught to him. Values play a key role in choosing a career. Social work as a career must remember the learned values and rules. The social worker has the ability to determine their personal value system and how it fits with the values and ethics of social work, which determine the role of a great social worker. First of all, before you can consider your career path, you need to have certain types of values to keep them grounded. As for me, my first and most important value is to honor your mother and father. This value is important because of what they had to give up, just to make my life worth living. However, just look at all the situations and circumstances my parents had to go through simply because they wanted to make sure their little “black girl” was taken care of. On the other hand, simply respecting myself is one of my precious values. Having respect for me, let others... middle of paper... do their best. My personal life will remain at home and not all over the workplace. The workplace is not a good place to broadcast a business because a customer doesn't want to hear what you do. The client might start to wonder if she can't help it, but I know she can't handle what I'm doing. Social workers need their core values taught to them from a young age to help them on their career path. The values will show them how this will affect or disaffect being a social worker. While social work is a job that involves advising and helping others, one must be prepared for the emotional roller coaster that may arise. Learning values in various places allows me to understand everything and use it as an opportunity to thrive in life. Social work is a calling and an honor to be a part of it, so understand that social workers make changes in people's lives..
