  • Essay / Brimbank Park: adaptive nature of the natural environment...

LocationBrimbank Park (coordinates 37.7340° S, 144.8370° E) is located in the Maribyrnong Valley (carved by the Maribyrnong River), near the Melbourne suburb of Keilor. It is crossed by the Maribynong River and the M80 motorway, revealing the adaptive nature of the natural environment in a growing urban area. (Parks Victoria, 2013)Figure 1: Map of Brimbank Park (Google Maps, 2014)GeologyBrimbank Park is mainly made up of sedimentary rocks, due to its proximity to the Maribyrnong River. Along the banks, alluvial deposits and terrace sediments originate from the Quaternary (Geological Map of Victoria, 1973). Although there is a distinct lack of igneous rocks in the area, sediments from primary igneous rocks upstream have been weathered and transported downstream on the river banks. This process was accelerated due to the presence of water in the ecosystem. Sedimentary rocks from the ancient Silurian period are further away from the river banks (Geological Map of Victoria, 1973). Deposits of mudstone, interbedded shale and greywacke indicate that the Maribyrnong River may have already taken a different shape, and that younger sediments replaced older sediments in more recent geological periods. The third alluvial deposit consists of minor interbedded sand, silt and gravel. , and again indicates how the geology of Brimbank Park has changed over time. (Geological Map of Victoria, 1973). These deposits, along with a nearby fault, suggest volcanic activity 5 to 1.6 million years ago, which explains the olivine basalt deposits (Fig. 2) that date back to the Silurian and Tertiary.
