When Meursault learns of his mother's death, he shows no emotion or sadness. The event has no effect on Meursault and he attends the funeral without showing any feelings (#7) of depression, sadness or remorse. Meursault, even when recalling the event of his mother's death, does not remember the day of her death, even if it was only a day before. Most people will remember the day they lost a loved one for the rest of their lives. Meursault, exhibiting sociopathic traits, has the ability to control others using his calmness. Meursault managed to convince Raymond not to shoot the Arab and put down his gun. (#16) Meanwhile, Meursault shows another trait of sociopathy that resulted in radical action: the murder of one of the Arabs. Even after Meursault shot the Arab, he fired four more bullets into the Arab's corpse. We can deduce from this that Meursault said to himself: the Arab was no more dead after the first round than during the last four rounds. Once again, Meursault feels no feelings of regret, remorse, or sorrow. At the end of his life, Meursault was sentenced to death. Meursault accepts this and, towards the very end, looks forward to death. It seems that the only thing that made Meursault happy in his life was the anticipation of his death.
