Essay / How writing has changed over the centuries - 930
Writing. Something we all know, some more than others. We use it in our daily lives, during the day and to accomplish what needs to be done. Some people in the world view writing as a tedious and pointless activity, but that couldn't be further from the truth. As you know, writing is constantly evolving; adapting to the times to meet the needs of us humans. Over time, the technology we invent changes the way we use writing, and gradually the definitions of writing become fuzzier. Writing is a tool, something that constantly changes and adapts in order to best suit those who use it. Back when writing was invented, computers, pens and pencils did not exist. The writing was composed of a wedging tool and clay in order to trace the commercial transactions of the Sumerian people (Baron). So how come writing has changed so much over time? “When we write with cutting-edge tools, it's easy to forget that we're talking about energetic particles on a screen, ink embedded in paper, or lines carved into clay tablets. , writing itself is always above all a technology, a way of designing materials to achieve an end” (Baron). As citizens of the 21st century, we are acutely aware of how quickly and widely technologies can change in a short period of time. Scientists design these technologies to best meet people's needs, so why can't writing change? Pens, pencils, and typewriters all brought monumental changes to the way people write. These technologies have allowed writing to become faster and broader than in previous years. Then came the computer, followed by the Internet. This left a huge impact in the world of writing... middle of paper ... no way we humans will ever be able to completely enumerate what is written and what is not. We need to realize that while many pieces have aspects of writing, they are not just writing, they are a new generation, something that has developed after years and years of work. The writing has changed since its creation. Over time, it will continue to change and adapt to other technologies created by us humans. We may lose some aspects of writing that we currently possess, but we will also gain new ones. Writing is a constantly evolving technology.
