Essay / Christopher Browning's Ordinary Men - 786
Christopher Browning shows how Police Battalion 101 received a lot of racist propaganda against the Jewish people. Browning explains in his book Ordinary Men, Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland, how the police contributed to the training and practice of killing many people at once during the formation of Battalion 101. Many members did not expect to kill thousands of Jews. Browning shows why some of the new police officers did not shoot the Jews they were asked to kill. The problem was due to the moral convictions of the men chosen to murder the Jews and the orders given by members of the German police. Ordinary Men is a good depiction of Police Battalion 101's involvement in the Holocaust. The book aims to show the events that this group of men participated in and how they reacted to them. Browning said the men of Police Battalion 101 were like any other people in Germany, normal and ordinary. They were five hundred middle-aged men from Germany who were working. They came from Hamburg, a city in Germany least influenced by Nazi beliefs and way of life. These men were selected to be part of it because they could demonstrate violent behavior. These men were taken from their families and regrouped. These groups had the mission of killing Jews. Why they took normal people away I don't know, but it shows how far the Nazis were willing to go to kill all the Jews in Europe. They were chosen because they were the only ones available for the mission. Amazingly, these men, who had no intention of killing people, were quite capable of killing tens of thousands of people and the way they killed was so great that they surprised the...... middle of paper ......ading this book I believe this book had a lot of information and made a good point as it made the reader put them in the shoes of Battalion 101. I could see the inhumane actions of Police Battalion 101, and it showed in a simple and understandable way the genocide throughout the Holocaust. The book showed the truth that these police officers had the opportunity to avoid killing Jews. However, many of them withdrew and engaged in massacres of Jews. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves history or the Holocaust because it shows a different perspective on the men who killed thousands of Jews. I love history and that's one of the reasons why I love it so much, because history is how you see things, so we have to get the truth every time we look at a historical event, because if we don't, history can be changed.
