Essay / Gender Roles in M. Butterfly - 1069
René and the pin-up show a common Western theme when it comes to Western men and female fantasies. René fantasizes about his perfect daughter who had the stereotypical features of a Western woman, but throughout the play he pursued an Asian woman. René also fights with his conscious named Marc who tries to boost René's confidence. René aspires to be like Marc who is a typically Western and self-confident ladies' man. René showed signs with his power play on Song but ended up not living up to Marc's expectations. Marc leaves René to his terrible fate and doesn't seem to care about giving René another chance. Hwang shows the disconnect between fantasy and reality with these characters. In reality, a person is limited, whereas in an imaginary setting, possibilities are limited.
