Essay / A Clash of Cultures - 896
A Clash of CulturesThe two main stories that have a negative ending are "The Rhodesia Train" and "The Frog with the Golden Legs." Both of these stories include the aspect of a "culture clash" which acts as a catalyst for negative endings. “The Rhodesia Train” incorporates the aspect of the meeting of two cultures from different parts of the world. This story is an allegory and describes the clash of cultures when white people enter the territory of black people and exploit them. The story is about a young couple who are on vacation and have bought a lot of souvenirs. On the quay, the young woman is attracted by a skillfully sculpted lion. The young woman does not buy the lion because she finds the price too high. When the train begins to leave the platform, the old black man runs after the train and sells the lion to the young man for half the original price. The young man tells his wife about his success and tries to please her but the young woman reacts differently; she is furious with her husband. The young woman is angry with her husband for humiliating the old man and making him chase the train, in addition to giving him less than half the price of the lion. She believes that the price paid does not reflect the creativity and time spent sculpting the lion. Another interpretation of this situation could be that the young woman was actually angry with herself. “The heat of shame rose up his legs and body and rang in his ears like the sound of flowing sand.” This quote could mean that the woman was actually angry. at herself for not buying the lion at full price in the first place, after all her husband was only trying to please her and wasn't thinking about how he was exploiting the poor black man. In this story, symbolism is also a main aspect; "…, and the lion, fallen on its side in a corner. the details of the surroundings and the blacks living in poverty through the eyes of the young woman: “Through the window, on the other side, there is no had nothing; sand and bush; a thorny tree” This strong imagery that we discover through the woman's gaze means that we feel even more sympathy towards black people and the poor..
