Trench warfare is a style of battle in which opposing forces dig trenches in front of each other and fight in hand-to-hand combat. Trenches were dug in zigzags and battlements to increase protection against the adversary. Fighting under such conditions proved extremely brutal. Although a form of savage warfare, trenches were advantageous over traditional battlefield warfare at that time. First, it offered many strategic advantages. With the advent of modern weapons such as heavy artillery and machine guns, trench warfare necessarily became important on the Western Front. Traditional tactics used by armies for centuries were now outdated and would prove to be a strategic disaster if implemented during the First World War. The armies had such confidence in the trenches that they were prepared to stand guard at each dawn and await enemy attacks which included heavy bombardment (46 the Great Way, modern memory). This reminds us of the second key advantage of trench warfare in World War I: security. The recognizes the fact that the trenches reduced the number of casualties among soldiers and protected them against modern weapons of adversaries, such as machine guns and heavy artillery. For example, a sentry could monitor its adversaries during heavy bombardments and report its findings in order to better prepare for future attacks, or worse.
