Essay / Courage in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee what Atticus Finch thinks about courage. Courage is a major theme in Harper Lee's book To Kill a Mockingbird and how it is shown in the characters in this novel. Courage is shown in Jem, Scout, Mrs. Dubose and the main character who showed a lot of courage was Atticus. Courage is shown in Jem and Scout several times throughout the novel and here are a few of them. At the beginning of the novel, Scout demonstrates the courage she had on the first day of school. She becomes courageous to tell Miss Caroline about Walter Cunningham's problem and his situation. Miss Caroline criticizes Scout for knowing how to read. Scout thinks the class needs leadership because most kids her age are afraid to talk to their teacher in this situation. She had the courage to speak out about Walter's situation. Jem faced a brave situation when he left his pants at the Radley house. It was braver to go after them rather than worry about Atticus whipping him. Jem risked his life to make Atticus angry, he might get shot but he still went for his pants. The courage he had and which saved him from a bad decision. Courage was demonstrated again when Jem, Scout and Dill were playing and Dill challenged Jem to go touch the Radley square. So Jem runs very fast and hits Radley's side behind him. Even though Jem knew he would be in trouble or something was going to happen, he was still brave to go to Radley's house, which he wasn't brave enough to do. Jem and Scout have shown courage on many occasions. “Your father is no better than the niggers and scum he works for!” said Mrs. Dubose. When she talked about Atticus like that, Jem got angry and decided that... middle of paper ... the people of Maycomb needed to hear the truth about Tom. “This boy can go and sit in the chair, but he won’t go until the truth is told.” Atticus later showed courage when he went to the prison to protect Tom from a mob. Without thinking twice, he rushed towards Tom. He knew the crowd would outnumber him and he would be easy to beat. Yet he put Tom's well-being after his own. Among all the examples of courage, there is no situation where the character was not courageous during this time. Jem, Scout, Mrs. Dubose, and Atticus understood the risks they faced, but continued with their actions. Scout was still facing scolding from Mrs. Caroline. Jem finally told his father what he had done to the Radleys. Mrs. Dubose died after being released from morphine. Atticus finally wins in his mind. They may have lost or won, but they don't regret the courage they showed, so good could happen.
