  • Essay / The benefits of evidence-based practice in healthcare,...

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is useful to practice because it helps the practitioner to develop and expands their knowledge and their vision, thus improving the practitioner's experience. This ensures that the best quality of care is given to the patient (Duncan, 2006). EBP is defined by Sacket et al as “the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of the best current evidence in making decisions regarding the care of individual patients.” (Duncan, 2006) It could therefore be argued that the best evidence in this context comes from information that has been researched using quantitative methods, that is, numerical data testing a hypothesis, such as trials randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (Duncan, 2006). Knowledge of EBP would benefit an occupational therapist, as literature and research demonstrate that any intervention is both clinically and cost-effective. It also gives occupational therapists the tools and evidence to justify and support some of the interventions to the patients they work with, the management team and to themselves (Taylor 2000). An example of evidence-based practice would be finding studies relevant to a specific area being researched. For example, to find the research article titled “The Effectiveness of Cotton Protective Gowns in Reducing Infection in Neutropenic Nursing Patients,” one would need to find the journal in which the article was published in that case, The International Journal of Nursing. Medline, an online database would be one method to find this. A list of relevant search terms should then be searched using the PICO framework, which limits the search to only relevant items and ensures that a well-constructed clinical question is then formulated (Drummond, 1998)... . middle of article......servational studies: a review of study designs, challenges and strategies to reduce confounding, International Journal of Clinical Practice, 63, issue 5: 691-697, available online at Wiley Interscience, accessed 12.11. .09Miller and Wilson.
