  • Essay / The sinking of the Titanic: how it could have happened...

The maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic will one day always be marked in history as an unforgettable night. Why didn't the Titanic arrive at its port in New York after crossing the Atlantic Ocean? The Titanic was designed to carry passengers from England, France and Ireland to North America (Gunner). What happened that night the Titanic sank to its cold, watery grave at the bottom of the North Atlantic? Was this due to the design of the ship or perhaps poor construction materials, naivety and human error? or just a combination of all these things? The sinking of the Titanic was a combination of all of these things, but mainly human naivety and error, convinced that the ship was unsinkable. The Titanic was built by White Star Lines under the direction of J. Bruce Ismay. He commissioned Belfast shipbuilders Harland and Wolff to build the Titanic as well as two other ships. Shipbuilders worked nine hours a day, six days a week, until construction of the Titanic was completed. On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic began its maiden voyage (Gunner). The enormous ship was approximately 880 feet long, 90 feet wide, weighed approximately 52,300 tons, and had 4.6 million cubic feet of space (Gunner). The Titanic was supposed to be watertight, and for safety reasons it had sixteen watertight compartments separated by doors that were either automatic or controllable by the crew. It had twenty-nine boilers with 159 furnaces and a maximum speed of twenty-four knots. The ship was built with two layers of steel to provide additional strength, this was called a double bottom hull. (Levinson 144).The Titanic left port to begin its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. It departed from Southampton, England and was scheduled to arrive on April 17, 1...... middle of paper..... .en out loud, and for the fact that they never had their lifeboat drills and so were unsure of the weight capacity. All these things mixed together all contributed to a great catastrophe that will go down in history as “the night to remember”. Works Cited Deitz, Dan. “How did the Titanic sink?
