Using social media for the hiring process is most closely related to act utilitarianism. The reason is that Jack didn't get the job he wanted. Choosing the greatest action for the greatest good would be not hiring Jack based on his social media. Instead, it is best to continue the search to find the right person for the job, because the right person will produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number possible. Choosing to invade Jack's privacy and examine his social media is the ethical decision to make. If Jack were to change his social network or not have a social network, then the possibility of him getting the job would be higher than it currently is, but would not benefit the company. This option would affect colleagues, Laura, the company and Jack. Hiring Jack may not bring the best outcome, as he complains online about his current job. It's possible he would do the same if he got the job at Laura's company. This would show Jack's coworkers and his company that he doesn't deserve to be a part of the company. It is unprofessional to speak ill of a current job, especially if it is posted online so that everyone, including co-workers, is aware of the information. If Jack has been confronted by Laura about his social media, then it is possible that he is changing his social media, deleting his posts, or simply changing his view of what he should put online, as it affects their future in terms of applying for a job. This option would do her the greatest good, as it would allow Laura to continue her research to find the right person for the position.
