  • Essay / Pepto, aka the best medicine - 722

Pepto-bismol was developed in the early 1900s in New York, at a time when sanitation conditions were very poor. Lack of hygiene has led to a common illness among children known as “infantile cholera.” The disease caused an outbreak of severe diarrhea, vomiting and sometimes death. As a result, a doctor developed a formula based on pepsin, zinc salts, salol and wintergreen oil as well as a dye that gave it a pink color. The formula fought against prodromes and was known as “Bismosal: Cholera Infantum Mixture”. As times progressed and hygiene also evolved, childhood cholera became less and less important. In 1919, in an attempt to attract new customers, a pharmaceutical company in Norwich gave it the name Pepto-Bismol. It began to attract more adults and by the 1940s it was considered more effective than the use of soda and alkalizers. What made it so appealing to customers was the calming effect its coating produced on both the stomach and intestine. This was very important because customers were happy with how the medicine reached not only the stomach, but also below the stomach, where many complications also occurred. Today, Proctor & Gamble, the current producer of Pepto-Bismol, claims that it is the only drug that relieves five stomach problems: heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach upset, and nausea (Lang 274 ). Pepto-Bismol is an antacid or absorbent that can be used in both humans and animals. It is referred to by many different names depending on one's knowledge of science or the different nicknames that have been given to it. These include: 2-hydroxy-4H-1,3,2-benzodioxabismin-4-one, Bismuth oxide salicylate, bismuth rose, pepto......middle of paper......l Pharma more. Katz Group Canada, nd Web.
