“Criminal procedure is part of the state's response to crime, the mechanism by which the state applies substantive criminal law to its citizens.” (Ashworth & Redmayne, 2005, p.2) In this essay I will examine the procedures of the criminal justice system. Before laying the foundations for this work, I will briefly devote a few lines to what the criminal justice system is. A criminal justice system is a set of legal and social institutions responsible for applying criminal law in accordance with a defined set of regulations and procedural restrictions. In every country there is a need to protect, guard and protect people and their property. The creation of laws is an essential form of protection and the establishment of a system to apply and enforce these laws is imperative. In this work I will examine the procedures of the criminal justice system in the United Kingdom.
