Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, what do they have in common? These are all social media sites. Social media has become the number one way to communicate with other people around the world. This has been beneficial and useful to many, on the contrary harmful to some. People use social media to reunite with a childhood friend, promote their business, or develop news more quickly. Other people use it to steal identities, intimidate others, and abuse others. It stated that social media are “websites and other online means of communication used by large groups of people to share information and develop social and professional contacts” (“social media”). With this in mind, how has social media influenced today's society? Additionally, how has technology transformed over the past 40 years? In 1970, a technological innovation appeared that brought a new, faster way to communicate with each other, email. Through email, people could ultimately obtain information more quickly and communicate with others. Ray Tomlinson created the first email "QWERTYUIOP" and said he only invented email: "Mainly because it seemed like a good idea, there were no guidelines for 'moving forward' and inventing e-mail" (Bellis and Tomlinson.)
