    Stretch Goal StatementI was sitting in my child development class in a “brick and mortar” classroom. What was I doing there? I was extremely interested in what the professor was talking about and what was being discussed. However, I was beginning to doubt whether I wanted to continue in my current field of study, speech pathology. I no longer felt fulfilled. Something was missing. I talked to a few of my friends who mentioned how much money I would make as a speech therapist. I heard what they were saying, but somehow it didn't matter. I had to find the missing link…….Rationale for Seeking a Major in a CACREP Related Program Deciding to become a student guidance counselor was not a decision taken lightly. I did a lot of reading and research before making a decision. I knew that once I began a graduate program in school counseling, it would be both challenging and committed to the end. I am somewhat nervous about this new journey that I am about to undertake; however, I am ready to take on the challenge and make the commitment. I am a newly licensed teacher and there will be areas and terminology that I am unfamiliar with. But what I have discovered so far is that a teacher and a student advisor have a lot in common. They both work with other teachers, parents, school administrators and the community in an academic setting. The skills I learned as a preschool principal and teacher will carry over into my career as a guidance counselor. I will have the skills to guide and enhance the social, academic, and personal growth of my students using a variety of strategies which will be my primary focus. Before applying to Capella University, I researched the counseling program and the benefits I would have by enrolling in this program. What I discovered is that the academic counseling program is accredited (CACREP), meaning that the university has taken the time and means to ensure that the program and standards are professionally stable. I have a master's degree in elementary education and am looking for a second in the field of school counseling. With my experience; my compassion for children and people and an opportunity to seek a new field of study, I hope that Capella University will allow me to continue my new and challenging educational journey to achieve my goal of becoming a school guidance counselor..
