    Tom makes a statement about "civilization in pieces" during dinner with his wife, Jordan, and Nick. The conversation begins after Daisy tells their guests that Tom injured his finger. Additionally, she goes on to call him “imposing.” Nick then responds by "joking" telling Daisy that she makes him feel "uncivilized (16)". Afterward, Tom says, “Civilization is collapsing. I became a terrible pessimist about things” (15-16). In fact, Daisy even proves Tom's compliance by stating, "Tom gets very deep." He reads deep books containing long words” (16). Tom continues to talk about his suspicious attitude and asks Nick if he has ever read a book called "The Rise of Colored Empires". Tom explains that the book advises "the white race" to take care of themselves and not let anyone else take power over them. Still according to this book, they must “produce everything that makes up civilization” (20-21). Such an incident proves that society is not always well mannered and deferential. Being racist is a characteristic of Tom himself throughout the novel. Society is portrayed in a cruel manner in the 1920s.
