    As Kierkegaard surmised, “life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” » People in times of transition in their lives may find the workshop useful as an opportunity to explore where they have been, where they are and where they are going. Some participants write their autobiography as a legacy for their family. The writers expressed concern and joy about what their children and grandchildren will think when they read stories they didn't know about their family. Garth Dawson and his wife Bonnie have participated in three autobiography workshops in different locations. Garth wrote his first autobiography, "Here's Fifty" while he and Bonnie were teaching in Poland for the Peace Corps. Expecting to write at least two pages each week, he helped Garth with his autobiographical sequel detailing the post-retirement years and the adventures, challenges and lessons learned during this period.
