    Injustice! Black people were not treated fairly. Jefferson achieves his goal of becoming a man at the end of the story. He achieves this goal by expressing himself, opening up to others and accepting his death. At first, Jefferson did not consider himself a man, as he was repeatedly called a pig in an attempt to prove to jurors that he was not in the right state of mind at the time of the shooting. As a result, he became psychologically attuned to the discriminatory label given to him during his trial. His goal set by others, like Miss Emma and Grant (towards the end), was to prove that the white lawyer was wrong for calling him a pig. He achieved this goal by speaking freely with Grant. Grant was the first person Jefferson was able to communicate with by actually speaking his mind and expressing his thoughts. After his mental shanty, Jefferson is reached by Grant after their argument and Jefferson says, "Hog knows things." he continues: “They’re going to kill me at Christmas.” It was the first time Jefferson truly spoke his truth....
