This short story includes not only horror, but also mystery. The main character is the anonymous narrator; Additionally, an old man and the police are mentioned throughout the story. Early in his story, the narrator began to describe his special ability to have heightened senses. He had the ability to hear just about anything. Many things that other humans couldn't do. Despite this, this ability has not always benefited his well-being. As the story progresses, the narrator mentions an old man. He even mentions that he was very kind to this old man; however, this act of kindness took place before he killed him. The narrator's initial desire to kill this man was due to the old man's unusual eye. He describes his eye as "a pale blue color with a film on it" (Poe np). This eye made the narrator anxious. Soon he began going to the old man's room every evening. Without making any noise, he would enter his room at night and light a lantern to see the eye. The story describes this eye as his “evil eye” (Poe np). One night, however, the old man woke up outside the narrator's entrance. The eye, however, was not the only thing he heard that night. The old man's heartbeat increased. Terror began to invade the narrator's mind. He took the old man and killed him by pulling the bed over him. Once the narrator could no longer hear the heartbeat or see the eyes, he began to think about how to dispose of the corpse. Taking the body from the bathtub, he cut off its head, arms and legs; by placing them under the ground. After cleaning everything up, it seemed like nothing had happened. At 4 p.m., police officers came to the door of the old man's house because they had received complaints about the noise. After inspecting the house and finding nothing, police moved into her home. The narrator felt like he had been in the house for a very long time and slowly began to feel guilty. Soon after, he began to hear
