Essay / My Interest in Studying Product Design and Manufacturing
Before a product is manufactured, marketed, and ultimately marketed, it must be designed to meet the needs of the consumer. These design, modeling and prototyping processes caught my interest because I believe these processes are the most important part of a product's life cycle. I realized I wanted to study product design and manufacturing after attending a student conference, where the design aspects of engineering captured my interest. Could current manufacturing processes, such as automated manufacturing with robotics, be more economical? Can resource conservation and recycling counteract emissions caused by mass production? Questions like these make me more interested in the manufacturing aspect of this course. In June 2018, the Vivo Nex S captured my interest because its front camera is hidden in a motorized mechanism that protrudes from the body of the phone; Such technological developments particularly fascinate me because of the innovative engineering parts of the course. The BSc in Physics provided me with a solid foundation for the technical aspects of this course, particularly in statics, dynamics, electricity and materials. Attending a materials science introductory day at the University of Oxford gave me a better understanding of the materials used in manufacturing and their applications in industry. I took part in extra-curricular projects such as working as an aerodynamic engineer for a UK Youth Rocketry competition; I am also leading my team in a Safe Cracking competition run by Weizmann UK. I was responsible for designing and manufacturing fins for our rocket under a tight deadline; I evaluated different materials and ultimately chose the material with the best strength-to-mass ratio. Through school-wide debates, I improved my communication skills and was able to speak to a wider audience. I have experience in video production as I have edited many videos for past school assemblies and for classroom presentations, which has enhanced my ability to present ideas and concepts in front of my peers. I gained confidence from my travel experiences over the summer. In 2017, in Australia, Singapore and India, traveling alone made my trip a challenging adventure, but overall it made me more resilient, decisive and independent. In addition, my travels have also allowed me to adapt and deal with unforeseen obstacles and problems, for example, while in Australia, due to heavy rains, I had to replan my stay taking into account extreme weather conditions. Outside of school, I helped promote events at local stores, which developed my negotiation skills. I taught a second language (Gujarati) to children in my local community, this gave me collaborative skills, the ability to think critically and improved my organizational and management skills. Conducting bake sales and fundraisers allowed me to learn to cook, develop management skills.
