Essay / Decisions: Breaking Fate for a Better Life - 982
Being a minority and trying to adapt to the American way is a difficult obstacle to overcome. A minority comes from different cultures and lifestyles, especially the parents, which means that a young person who is a minority has a specific lifestyle to live because the parents want their child to live in a similar way to the tradition. However, there are young minorities who are trying to connect their personal tradition and their own American tradition to improve their lives. For example, in the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, he illustrates a young Native American, Junior, struggling with friends who pressure him to follow tradition instead of living a different life. Despite the struggles and pressures, he pursues his dream instead of following tradition. Therefore, an individual does not need to follow the norms of their community, rather they can follow their own aspirations, but they will struggle with negative pressure from their community and peers because they live a different life. Despite the struggle the individual will face, he or she can change their community for the better because they have improved their own life. Minority individuals who grew up in the United States live in a community where norms attempt to be preserved; therefore, traditions are strictly enforced by peers, family, and friends because they believe that is the only way to live. In other words, minority youth are forced to learn the norms of their community in America because their own are afraid those norms will be lost. For example, Junior is the representative of a young minority youth force that enforces norms on his Native American reservation. In his reserve, middle of paper......tA single person who differs from the norms of his community becomes a hope after evolving as an individual. To prove the above statement, Junior who experiences two worlds discovered the advantages and disadvantages of his two communities. He is educated through American education and is able to teach his peers on the reservation. Additionally, he has learned about the American way of life and can slowly help implement the tactics that work best for his family and community. Junior will little by little be able to create hope in his reserve and many young people will be able to continue on the path to success. As a result, the improvement of communities comes from individuals striving to make their lives healthier than before. Works Cited Alexie, Sherman, Ellen Forney and Mechthild Hesse.
