  • Essay / Raven's Progressive Matrices Test - 1659

General Information For this project, I researched Raven's Progressive Matrices Test, or RPM, as well as Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices Test, and a little about testing colored progressive matrices. The RPM was developed by John C. Raven in 1936 and first published in 1938. The Advanced Matrices were published in 1947 for the British War Office selection committees, as they needed to develop more advanced tests. Since then, various versions have been updated and released over the years. There are three versions of the test as previously stated; There are standard progressive dies, colored progressive dies and advanced progressive dies. Currently, the test is published by Pearson and the complete kit, including all three versions of the test, costs approximately $900 to purchase (Pearson). Answer sheets can cost between $30 and $53, depending on the number offered in a packet and the section of the test the answer sheet is intended for. Description According to the Raven Testing Manual, the Advanced Test has two parts. There are a total of 48 items on the test. Set I contains sets of 12 elements each. Items become progressively more difficult with each set. Set II contains 36 items and is more difficult than Set I. It is a multiple-choice nonverbal test used for all ages, but is typically used in educational settings. The test itself measures reasoning skills and also tests general intelligence. During the test, the candidate is asked to identify a missing piece that completes a pattern of a puzzle and the patterns are presented in 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4 matrices. There are two sample questions on the test below. There are three versions. of the test and as previously stated, I ...... middle of paper ...... the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.
