  • Essay / Analysis of Romeo and Juliet Act 1 and Act 3 - 1092

How does Shakespeare use dramatic devices in Act 1, Scene 1 and Act 3, Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet in order to 'making it such an interesting, exciting and important drama “Romeo and Juliet is an Elizabethan play that was written to entertain the audience. It was written in 1595 by William Shakespeare and was one of his most popular plays. This romantic play takes place in Italy, in a city called Verona. The basic plot of this particular play is where two young "star-crossed lovers", Juliet's Capulet and Romeo's Montague, fall instantly in love, but with their family's rivalry, things weren't going to be easy. Romeo hears about a family party the Capulets are having and his door crashes down. Tybalt's cousin Juliette is furious and wants revenge. Tybalt goes looking for Romeo to kill him but Mercutio's best friend Romeo tries to intervene, which ends up getting himself killed. Romeo is upset by what happened, so he lashes out at Tybalt and commits suicide. Romeo is banished from Verona and must never see Juliet again. The play ends with the death of the two lovers which the audience knew from the beginning would happen. This play falls into the tragic genre due to the deaths of Mercutio, Tybalt, Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare's play has different themes such as destiny where Romeo and Juliet were destined to be together from the beginning, love where Romeo and Juliet are in love with each other, time where it is precious and death with the murders of the characters. The first act, scene 1, shows that the play begins as a possible romance/comedy, because from act 3, scene 1, the play turns into a tragedy. At the beginning of Act 1, Scene 1, Shakespeare sets the wide-open play in a public place, where two Capulet's servants, Sampson and Gregory ba...... middle of paper ......interested in the play itself, where as in act 3 scene 1 there is the death of Mercutio which is the turning point of the play and also of Tybalt so the audience completely changes its vision of the play. I think that scene 1 of act 1 is uninteresting and not very entertaining because nothing really happens whereas, like in act 3, scene 1 happens more, more entertaining and a lot more tension is introduced. I think both scenes carry the main message and are the most important scenes in the play. Shakespeare was very successful in using dramatic devices throughout Act 1, Scene 1 and Act 3, Scenes 1 because from the beginning of the play he captures the audience's attention, the audience is involved and creates an atmosphere. This play was probably perceived as romantic, which shows that the audience should not have thought that without first watching the play..
