Themes of a Soldier's WarThe Vietnam War was difficult for the country to deal with, let alone a single soldier. Many soldiers had to deal with the various personal and physiological effects of this war. This Vietnam War was different from all other wars. This war was unconventional. When we got into it, it was more about fighting the spread of communism, and then it slowly changed over the years. Going to Vietnam was different in every sense of the word, combat conditions, weather and the dense jungle environment. During the war, some soldiers were ready to go and fight and others were not and opposed the war. The majority of the American public did not oppose this war until it seemed like a battle that could never be won in the long run. In both books, the main characters describe how the war seemed like it would never end. Guerrilla warfare was unlike anything our soldiers had ever seen before. Soldiers daily fought enemies hiding under their noses. These books revealed the deep truth about the personal experiences of soldiers and showed us that war affected soldiers, regardless of which side of the battlefield they fought for and the ideals each of them personally held. The Vietnam War impacted soldiers in different ways. Most soldiers witnessed horrific violence and lost friends to the horrors of war on both sides during battles. In the book The Sorrow of War enlightened us about the thoughts and effects of the war, and also opened up the point of view from the North Vietnam side. Many soldiers who fought in Vietnam suffered emotional and physical injuries that would stay with them for the rest of their lives.
