In Washington state, a thirteen-year-old boy complained to a school counselor that his parents made him go to church too often. In response, the boy was placed in foster care until the parents agreed that the boy should only go once a week. Another case is that of Sheila Sumey, who, at thirteen years old, was punished when her parents discovered that she smoked marijuana. When she complained to a counselor, he informed her that because of the “child-parent” conflict, she could break free from her parents. Child Protective Services agreed with her and removed her from her family. Yet another example is a West Virginia circuit court awarding full custody of a woman's three-year-old child to two babysitters while the woman planned to move to Texas. The court affirmed that the guards were “psychological co-parents.” Ultimately, they gave the mother primary but joint custody with the female guardians, until the Supreme Court heard the case. They immediately ruled that the mother, who has never been found unfit, should not be required to relinquish parental rights to her daughter. However, a West Virginia court nevertheless found this decision entirely acceptable; To say that someone who forms a “special bond” with a three-year-old should even get partial custody of the child is absurd.
