Essay / Similarities Between Christ and Buddha - 660
Icons throughout history have had many different meanings, whether sacred or for everyday life. Each culture practices different ideologies which come with a range of different interpretations. Paintings, sculptures and handicrafts are examples of different media used to represent icons, yet they could have the same meaning as each other. In Christ the Savior of Souls, from the early 14th century of the Church of Saint-Clement, the artist uses as his subject a highly spiritual figure, placed in the central fold, using contrasting colors to convey its importance to the people who come in its presence and to show the divinity of the figure itself. Representing a similar trend, the Buddha seated on a lion throne dating from the 2nd century CE in India presents the same meaning of a highly spiritual human being, acting on his disciples but through an entirely different art form. These two forms are of great importance both to the spirituality of their followers and to ordinary people. Often placed in a fearful location judged by their culture, it serves as a relic and reminder of the ideology they choose to follow. Christ the Savior of souls and seated Buddha have many similarities. These two icons represent two rulers of a spiritual kingdom or religion; Christ is the head of Christianity and Buddha the head of Buddhism. Christ, the centerpiece of the painting, is represented in a divine state, his clothing is vibrantly colored and his folds are strictly Byzantine with his schematic appearance. Christ holding the Bible in one hand while blessing the worshipers with the right hand gesture, similar to the Buddha, seated in the ordered yogic pose, also showing the fearless hand gesture and the wheel of law located in the palm and sole. of his feet. This s...... middle of paper ...... things like Christ are not idols that followers worship but rather are sacred reminders of him that people remember as the savior, in comparison with Buddhism where they worship the statues and feed the statue as if it were a human being. Christ the Savior of Souls and Buddha Seated on the Lion Throne are similar in that each piece has the same visual composition and depicts a spiritual leader in a divine manner. Two very distinct and different cultures with similar motives, but the people who follow them have contrasting ideology. Over time, many cultures often draw inspiration from previous cultures to make their work more interesting and appealing to their audiences. These two pieces are a great example of mixing different periodic styles to make a piece more visually interesting and not only focusing on the visual side but also on its meaning..
