Essay / Refugee and concept of refugee - 1355
Due to recent events, explicitly the multitude of attacks in France and Germany in current media, the concept of refugee has been mixed and associated with the notions of terrorism and violence. Refugee status is vital if people displaced by conflict are to be accepted by the global community. The idea behind refugee status is that you should be able to find a new, safe place to live. The stigmatization of refugees and the association with terrorist attacks, violence and discord causes a vast dichotomy between what it actually means to be a refugee and terrorists who exploit refugee status to advance their own interests or those of a band. Media issues go hand in hand with current refugee issues. While anthropologists seek to understand why and how people are affected by conflict and then become refugees, the media largely tends to undermine this, thereby undermining the validity of refugee claims. It is also the interchangeability used by the media between the terms migrant and refugee which limits the way in which the concept of refugee is used. The difference is however important in that refugees are protected by international and national laws while migrants do not benefit from the same protections and are subject to immigration policy and nations have no obligation to take action.
