Essay / The Importance of Sexual Objectification - 1491
What is Sexual Objectification? Under what circumstances (if any) might this be morally permissible? Sexual objectification refers to the way in which one person sexually reduces another by treating them as a mere sexual object (Halwani). Sexual objectification is rarely considered a trivial topic, although throughout this assessment a wide range of informed and varied opinions are discussed, highlighting the ambiguity of the term in relation to the morality of sexual objectification. Halwani's definition only encompasses the “treatment” and/or “behavioral” aspects of sexual objectification. Nonetheless, Halwani recognizes that the process by which a person is sexually objectified most frequently occurs in the following scenarios: During casual sex, the parties wanting nothing more than the other party body-party, essentially their sexual parts. When we look at photos of naked people and are intrigued by their sexual aspects. Engage in pornography because the material already objectifies its actors as models (Halwani). Performing a person's bodily features, such as "their booty" as they walk past. Catcalling, reducing the person only to their physical appearance and finally, fantasizing about someone, as it objectifies them only on their physical appearance and can in turn symbolize men or women holistically (Halwani, 2010 , pp. 186). Allowing for a broader discussion of when sexual objectification is morally permissible (if ever), the ideas constructed by Immanuel Kant, Martha Nussbaum, and David Soble are widely evaluated in order to determine when sexual objectification is permissible. on the other hand, their dignity and humanity are reduced by treating them solely on the basis of their looks...... middle of paper ...... ted in a marriage cannot be sexually objectified and treated like 'an unacceptable manner. Although contradictory to Kant's views on sexual objectification, Nussbaum believes that sexual objectification is permissible if it is carried out simultaneously, with mutual respect and if the parties have equal social status, thus eliminating any risk of feeling dehumanized or subordinated. Finally, concerns surrounding pornography and sexual objectification are leveraged through Soble's perspective, illustrating that when sexual objectification is put in context with pornography, it is morally wrong because it goes against the goal of humanity by treating the individual solely as a sexual object. All philosophical views presented have been challenged and/or questioned, although, thanks to the views of these philosophers, we have few circumstances in which sexual objectification is morally permissible, and not.
