Essay / Descartes' Correlation Between Mind and Body - 1005
René Descartes once said: “There is a great difference between the mind and the body.” This statement comes from the idea that Descartes believed that there were two substances that constituted reality. One of the substances actually that Descartes calls extension, or material being, which means it takes up space. The other concerns the immaterial mind, or thought. This is called dualistic metaphysics. Descartes began his exploration of the material and the immaterial with an epistemological detour. It is simply about discovering metaphysical truth through epistemological analysis. The question at hand has been around for centuries: How are the mind and body independent of each other? To get an idea of how the mind and body work together, Descartes had two ideas that he played with. The first concerned material being and how it is subject to physical laws. The second idea is how the mind was able to make things happen. This is confusing because it destroys the idea that matter, especially the human body, always obeys the law of matter. How can a thought cause an action? Descartes played with different theories. One of these theories, which even Descartes considered insane, was that the mind, through the vital spirits, interacted with the physical body in the brain. This symbolic reflection did not last. After thinking about this connection between mind and matter, it is believed that some of Descartes' followers came up with a theory to explain the interaction between the material and the immaterial. The idea is known as parallelism. This is how the mind does not make the body move. What really happens, they believed, is that an idea for action occurs, and then an action actually occurs. They thought it was middle of paper... You can complain and in your mind you're not really into it. However, once you get started, you start getting into physical and mental exercise. When you're done with your workout, you're ready to take on whatever lies ahead. Physically you are stronger and I believe that thanks to the endorphins involved in your body you are also mentally recharged. Again, I can base this on personal experience. Getting up and going to do an activity isn't always a priority. But it is a necessity. I agree with Descartes in this theory of the connection between mind and body. I have experienced this on a daily basis and have seen for myself how your physical state can change your mental state. The ideas derived from Descartes are impressive, and I can see how even today we tend to rely on some of these same concepts..
