The 1960s was a time in the United States when new ideas were developing, particularly ideas relating to the civil rights movement and its expansion. Demonstrations, parades, and riots were occurring in an effort to spread freedom for all, and as some of these events became prominent in the news, tensions in the country rose. Violence occurs in many parts of the country due to the ideas of those who do not enjoy the freedoms they believe they are entitled to. African Americans found themselves disenfranchised in a world where they were just like everyone else, regardless of the color of their skin. One specific city that was affected by these ideas was Rochester, New York. Rochester is a city with a rich history and was considered one of the first cities to "boom" when it was founded. However, the summer of 1964 presented a new problem. A hot summer and racial tensions sparked a three-day riot that transformed the city. The riots had many effects on the city, affecting businesses, the people around it, and people's opinions of each other. The city's schools were particularly hard hit. They were already bad to begin with, with below-average grades, poor dropout rates, and lower budgets than out-of-town schools. Standards were consistently lower, and the riots certainly did not help solve this problem. The riots caused an unnoticed divide between the city and outside the city due to negative views sparked by the riots. Due to the race riots that took place in Rochester during the summer of 1964, there was an even greater division in education between inner city and outlying schools, causing downgrading and removing the middle of the paper. ......Area.
