Essay / International students in higher education: how to deal with it?
Having international students pursue higher education here in the United States can be very beneficial not only to the college or university, but also to other students attending the school. International students help bring diversity to campus life. These students also help bring different and new perspectives to the classroom. Another benefit of having international students pursue higher education here in the United States is that it helps increase tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of different countries and cultures around the world (Crowson, 2010, p. 413 ). International students may have difficulty adjusting to college or university once they arrive here. Things like campus life and real or perceived discrimination can have negative impacts on a student's college or university experience. For international students, living on campus can be difficult. As with everything else, when attending a college or university for the first time, it can be difficult to adjust and can be a culture shock for the student. Although living on campus for international students has the benefit of being close by, it appears that more international students would prefer to live off campus. International students would prefer to live off campus for several reasons. One reason could be that they feel that the cost of living on campus is higher than living off campus (Poyrazli and Grahame, 2006, p. 34). International students believe the school should change prices for on-campus living in a residence hall to be more competitive with off-campus housing, which would then help international students from lower socio-economic statuses lower and it would be...... of paper ......e international students with information on how to find items inexpensively (Poyrazli & Grahame, 2006, p. 41). I think there are many other challenges and adjustments for international students when living on campus. It was very difficult and little information could be found on the impact of international students living with other international students or the effect of living with students from the United States. I think when international students live with American students, it can have a big impact on how the international student adapts to their time in the United States, both positively or negatively depending on the roommate with which he can live. Further research on this topic needs to be conducted in order to see what can be done to help improve the time international students spend in higher education in the United States..
