Cystic FibrosisCystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. People with cystic fibrosis inherit a faulty gene that causes a buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs of the human body. This CFTR gene contains a protein product that causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus. The accumulation of mucus in the lungs can cause lung damage and lead to respiratory failure. Mucus built up in the pancreas prevents the body from breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. This can lead to malnutrition and poor growth. Cystic fibrosis is a chronic disease, meaning it can only be controlled, but there is currently no cure. Cystic fibrosis is diagnosed in children, usually at birth, through newborn screening. Treatment for cystic fibrosis requires therapy that addresses problems in the body, primarily in the digestive system and lungs.
