Essay / The Silent Wife and The Great Gatsby - 1060
The Silent Wife and The Great Gatsby: LoyaltyHaving too little or too much loyalty can be unhealthy in a relationship, either one can destroy a person. In The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby's entire life was hijacked due to his goal of being with Daisy. In ASA Harrison's The Silent Wife, Todd cheated on his wife and only continued to make worse decisions, betraying her further. Due to Gatsby's extreme loyalty to Daisy this ultimately led to his death, unlike Todd he had betrayed his wife and lost everything he truly cared about and it was only in his final moments that he fully realized that he wished he could choose her instead. The story of The Great Gatsby took place five years after Gatsby and Daisy first met and formed a relationship. Although it ended abruptly, Gatsby still tried to find Daisy over the next five years, without success. One day, during one of his big parties, which he organizes in the hope that Daisy will come, he meets Nick. While there, Gatsby discovered that he and Daisy were cousins and that he knew Daisy's best friend. Seeing an opportunity, he asked Daisy's friend to explain his situation to Nick and asked him to "invite Daisy to your house one afternoon and then let him come over." (Fitzgerald, page 76). Despite Gatsby's efforts, he was unable to find his lover. Eventually, when he found a connection with Daisy, he wanted to use Nick to prove to Daisy that he was the man she should be with and that he had the money to take care of her. In comparison to The Great Gatsby, in The Silent Wife, Todd had been unfaithful to his wife Jodi. While depressed, he became involved with his best friend ... middle of paper ... and suffered the consequences of his betrayal as Gatsby was loyal to Daisy and tried to protect her. Because of Gatsby's refusal to give up the love of his life, it ultimately led to his death, while Todd's infidelity led to a series of mistakes that led him to the same fate. In Harrison's thriller novel The Silent Wife, Todd had betrayed his wife and hurt her to the point that she decided it was best for him to die. Meanwhile, in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Gatsby's loyalty led him to devote everything to a woman who never loved him the way he wanted. Loyalty and betrayal can simultaneously place a person in an undesirable and dangerous position. Works Cited Fitzgerald, Scott. The Great Gatsby. Toronto: Penguin Books Canada Ltd, 1950. Print.
