Essay / My Personal Philosophy of Teaching - 1049
Philosophy of TeachingThe purpose of this article is to identify/describe and discuss my personal teaching of philosophy. In describing my learning theory, I will talk about experiences that have affected me. As well as identifying the educational areas that have influenced my personal philosophy. I will then describe how my teaching of philosophy guides my teaching style.Personal ExperiencesMy personal philosophy of teaching is grounded in my experiences as a student. These experiences as a student affected my beliefs about teaching and learning. I still remember my third grade teacher, Mr. Luther, to this day, and I feel like he was one of the best teachers I had because not only did he teach us the subjects, but he encouraged us to learn for ourselves. He achieved this by creating a safe working environment for students to learn. A place where we felt that even though we were young, we could ask questions and formulate ideas. It also emphasizes fun learning and active experience. Mr. Luther had brought the Math Olympics to our school. Math was never one of my favorite subjects, but having to solve the flash cards and math problems, and then being able to run, jump, or overcome obstacles to move my team forward, was a great incentive In my opinion. PedagogicsKolb's Experiential Learning Theory describes learning as a process, a 4-step cycle in which learning is based on experiences. Learners move through phases of concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation as they learn new tasks (Nilson, 2010). Laschinger (1990) suggests that Kolb's theory of experiential learning is important to nursing education. She suggests that Kolb's learning cycle promotes the development...... middle of paper ...... my teaching philosophy and how it guides my teaching style. My development as a learner was encouraged by a handful of teachers who were passionate, willing to adapt their teaching styles to my learning style to help me reach my full potential. Their actions encouraged me to have confidence in myself and my ability to learn. My teaching philosophy is that everyone has the ability to learn, and by empowering students to learn, the learning style models of Kolb, Felder, and Silverman have influenced my teaching philosophy in as they encourage adding a variety of teaching methods to help students with different learning preferences. Therefore, by recognizing that there are different learning styles and using different methods to explore topics, students' learning is maximized and they are able to recognize their own potential and succeed..
