Essay / Theories on Development and Modernization - 1316
In Malaysia, development is very important to achieve Vision 2020. From a social science perspective, development cannot be explained by common sense. Earlier thinkers have their own theories and measures to explain development. In general, definitions of development are as follows: “when development thinking expanded to encompass modernization, economic growth was combined with political modernization, that is, nation building and social modernization, by promoting entrepreneurship and orientation towards success” (Pieterse, 2010, p. 6). As fuck, there are three theories that can be used to explain development: modernization theory, dependency theory, and world system theory (see Figure 1 in Appendix 1). Modernization TheoryThe first theory to explain development is the introduced modernization theory. by Walt Whitman Rostow who explains five steps to take to develop yourself. The stages have been called the linear stages of growth model to explain the process of economic growth in which the process is seen as a series of successive stages of economic growth through which all countries must pass. According to Rostow (1960), there are five stages of development in which these stages focus on the development from underdevelopment to development or in other words, these stages explain the shift from an agricultural society with traditional cultural practices to a rational economy focused on industry and services. The first stage is “traditional society”. At this point, society is entirely dependent on agriculture for survival and resources. They rely on political systems in which power rested with people who control the land that is cultivated in the middle of paper.
