Women are still paid 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. Not only does this perpetuate sexism in extremely obvious ways, it's also one of the most harmful. While being insulted or subtly demeaned can be detrimental to women's psyches, the pay gap is detrimental to their physical and emotional well-being. Most people say that to make a big career change, the person changing jobs must have enough money saved to live on for a full year. It's a pretty logical idea, but it's something that is much easier for men to achieve, given that they receive a higher salary. They are able to save money, whereas it is more likely that a woman will have to spend her entire salary just to live. She won't be able to quit her job, even if she hates it, simply because she can't afford it. A man with the same qualifications may not have to worry about this, since he earns on average 23 cents more on the dollar than she does. This seems to me to be the root of sexism and one of the first things we as a society need to fix to help women feel more equal in the world. Women have come a long way since the days of The Great Gatsby, but the world still has a long way to go before they can truly feel equal to men.
