Essay / Problems of Segregation in Any Environment - 861
The Help by Katherine Stockett and Marriage is a Private Affair by Chinua Achebe both express the problems of segregation through character development. Both of these stories take place at a time when segregation was an everyday thing and was not as frowned upon as it is today. However, that said, the same moral values that we have today about segregation, especially over something as trivial as the color of their skin, were held by some and these were the people who actually stood up for themselves. raised against this discrimination and did something to remedy it. . These stories are about people like this, people who aren't afraid to stand up against something they know is wrong, even in the face of danger. In The Help and Marriage is a Private Affair, characters who experience discrimination are characterized as being unhappy with the way they are treated, and although others push them down, they remain strong and able to fight for it. what they believe and what they believe in. they know that deep down, they are right. The Help is a perfect example of a book that features many strong characters who are held back by segregation. Specifically, this book is about the unjust discrimination against people of color in the United States in the early sixties. Many people, mostly victims of discrimination, were angry at the injustices they had endured and reached a breaking point at some point in their lives. That's when these people decided to somehow change the bad actions that were affecting people like them and make others see things their way. “It didn't take long before I realized that something in me had changed. A bitter seed was planted in me. And I didn’t feel as accepting anymore” (Stockett 2). It was a difficult time for...... middle of paper ......ry is set at a time when the segregation of the tribes was already beginning to fade, and it was almost easy for Nnameka and Nene to break. through the rules and showing many people that there is nothing wrong with others outside of their tribe. Segregation and discrimination of any person or race is unjust and should not be allowed or accepted. Both of these stories are about the problems caused by segregation and are written to prove that it is a horrible thing to be separated from someone and that discrimination causes more problems than it helps anything. These two stories attempt to change society's view of discrimination to bring it closer to that of their author. We hope that these two books have had a positive effect on society, as they were intended to do, and helped people realize that it is never acceptable to treat people differently because society wants them to do it..
