    Our health care system is currently undergoing much-needed reform. We hear too often about the uninsured and underinsured, how many millions of Americans are left without it. What we don't hear about is how implementing new health IT strategies will also help reform the healthcare system. We are all aware of the government's current financial situation, but we can't get anywhere without spending first. What are the main stages in the development and advancement of health information technology? Health information technology (IT) has always been in development, but in recent years. Over the past decade, we've seen health IT evolve into new advancements we never thought we'd see. In 2004, President Bush set a ten-year goal for health information technology and established the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Social Services (ONC). The mission of the ONC is to promote the development of a nationwide health IT infrastructure that enables electronic use and exchange of information, provided leadership in the recognition of development and implementation standards, the coordination of health IT policies, strategic planning and the establishment of governance for all of national health. In February 2009, President Obama signed the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which became the framework for America's expansion of health information technology. HITECH's primary goal is to support providers who adopted health IT into their practices between 2011 and 2015. The legislation received $19.2 billion to support providers (Cullen, 2011).
